Carman Addison (Mac) McCown was born June 23, 1926. His birthmother is unknown but loved him enough as a newborn baby to leave him on the steps of the Salvation Army in Texarkana, Arkansas. Details of Mac's childhood are unknown but he was lovingly adopted by Charles W. McCown and Vola Verne Albritton McCown. Upon his parents' early deaths, Mac was raised by his adopted sisters, Vivian, Agnes and Mercedes.
Mac joined the United States Air force in 1944 where he served until his discharge in 1948. He attended Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
Mac moved to Scurry County in 1952 where he started his career in the oil industry. In April, 1955, he met his wife, Mary Alice Price. They were married on October 22, 1955. The majority of their time was spent in Snyder, Texas were they raised their two sons, Randy and Lawrence.
Mac was a most generous man who never met a stranger. He was known by family and friends as a true servant as indicated by actively serving as a member of the Lions Clubs International since he joined the Snyder Lions Club in 1975. ""I liked the 'We Serve' motto,""Mac said. He has held many offices but most significantly in 1993-1994 he served as district governor of District 2T2, which includes 22 counties including Scurry County. Lions Club projects have always been close to Mac's heart. One of his favorite is the Texas Lions Camp for handicapped or diabetic children located in Kerrville, Texas. Mac served seven years on the camps executive board and was president of the camp from 2002-2003. Mac has earned many awards including the highest award of all - Ambassador of Goodwill - presented in 2007.
In 2007, Mac and Mary moved to McKinney Texas to be near their oldest son Randy and his family. Mac went to be with his Lord and Savior at 4:50pm March 14, 2013. Mac is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary. Also, son Randy McCown and his wife Leann - their sons, Austin and Nathan of McKinney, Texas. In addition, Lawrence McCown, Diane Hayes and son James. Two nieces, Bettye Sprayberry of Vandila, Illinois and Bobbie Saintsear of Slidell, Louisiana.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 17, 2013 at Bell Cypert Seale Funeral Home in Snyder from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. The memorial service will be held in the Chapel at First Baptist Church Snyder on Monday, March 18, 2013 at 10:00am. Graveside service will follow at Hillside Memorial Gardens.
