Oma Merle Houston

Oma Merle Houston, age 97, lifelong Scurry County resident, died Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at Lakeridge Nursing Home in Lubbock, Texas after a lengthy illness.

Graveside services for Mrs. Houston will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 3:00 PM at Hillside Memorial Gardens with Dr. Darold Baldwin officiating under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.

Mrs. Houston was born on October 13, 1915 in Big Spring, TX to John and Leila (Kennedy) Buchanan. She was a long time member of the First Baptist Church in Snyder. She and her husband farmed over 60 years in the Fluvanna, Knapp, and Hermleigh communities. Still driving her car at 95, she picked black eyed peas from her garden on the farm to share with friends at the Scurry County Senior Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Houston, son Bill Houston, and infant grandson Dayne Carroll Houston, her parents, and two brothers John and Phil Buchanan.
