Florentz "Flo" Winston Joyce, the daughter of a pioneer ranching family in Scurry County, died Monday, May 24, 2010, in Abilene, TX, at Sears Methodist"s Wesley Court Nursing Center after a lengthy illness.
A graveside service for Mrs. Joyce, 91, will be held Wednesday, May 26 at 10:00 a.m. at Hillside Memorial Garden in Snyder, Texas, under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home. Minister officiating will be Dr. Cliff Stewart of First Central Presbyterian Church of Abilene, Texas. A visitation will be Tuesday evening at 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Born February 13, 1919, in Snyder, TX, she graduated from Snyder High School and attended Hardin Simmons University. She married John Robert (Sam) Joyce on December 14, 1937, in Breckenridge, Texas. Mr. Joyce died February 8, 1988. Their son, John W. Joyce, died February 7, 1993.
Mrs. Joyce"s father, Wade Winston, was a partner in the Winston Brothers ranching and livestock business. Her father died in 1958 and her mother, LeClaire, died in 1980. Her uncle and partner in the Winston Brothers Ranch, Harrie, died in 1974.
She lived most of her life in Snyder. During World War II, when Sam was employed as a civilian final inspector of planes of the Air Force, the family was in San Antonio. In January 2006 she moved to Abilene"s Wesley Court.
Mrs. Joyce, an accomplished homemaker, was a long-time member of Colonial Hill Baptist Church, a life member of the Martha Ann Womans Club, and a founding member of Martin Preuitt Jr. Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She had been a member of Cosmorama Study club and several bridge clubs.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Travis Hatter of Abilene; a granddaughter and her husband, Mary and Roger Boone of Whitehouse, Texas; a grandson and his wife, Wade and Terah Hatter of Abilene; and five great-grandchildren, Derek, Brady, and Reanna Boone of Whitehouse; and Travis and Tysen Hatter of Abilene.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Cogdell Memorial Hospital Foundation, 1700 Cogdell Blvd., Snyder TX 79549; Sears Methodist Foundation, 1 Village Dr., Abilene TX 79606; or the Sam Joyce Memorial Scholarship, Western Texas College, 6200 College Avenue, Snyder TX 79549; or a charity of choice.
