James M. "Dutch" Stehley 86, longtime Snyder resident , died Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at Cogdell Memorial Hospital in Snyder, Texas after a length illness.
Services for Mr. Stehley will be Friday at the First Presbyterian Church with Mr. Jimmy Sullenger and Rev. Dana Mayfield officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Memorial Gardens under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Funeral Home.
Mr. Stehley was born on February 01, 1924 Woodston Kansas to the late William M. and Marie (Osborne) Stehley. He was a four sport letterman at Phillipsburg High School where he earned all state honors in football his senior year. He went on to play football and basketball as a freshman at the University of Missouri just before the start of World War II. Mr. Stehley joined the U. S. Air Force and earned his wings in 1944 flying a P-38. He said his only combat mission turned out to be a false alarm as he and another pilot received word that two Japanese planes were 200 miles off the coast of California. After the war Mr. Stehley served in the Air Force reserve.
He then enrolled at Kansas State University where he lettered in football for four years and earned his degree. He the served as football coach in Marysville Kansas for six years. In 1956 , John Conley, a teammate at Kansas State, was serving as head coach in Snyder and contacted Mr. Stehley and offered him a position on the staff in Snyder. Mr. Stehley coached junior varsity football and served as head track coach for 10 years where his teams won district championship all 10 years. .. He then became assistant principal at Travis Junior High. He was then made principal of Snyder Junior High where he served for 10 years before retiring in 1986. Mr. Stehley was inducted into the SHS Athletic Hall of Honor in 2006.
He was past-president of the Snyder Kiwanis Club and Retired Teachers Association and was a life member of the American Legion. He also was a member of the Abilene Chapter of Retired Military Officers and had also served as a deacon of the First Presbyterian Church. He served as a meal-on-wheels volunteer for 21 years.
He was married to Donna Kramer on August 6, 1950 in Frankfort Kansas.
