Ruth Evelyn Thomas Fields died on Christmas Day, 2011 in Kerrville, Texas at the age of 94. She was born August 4, 1917, the third of four children of Clyde and Annie Bea Walton Thomas, and came of age during the Great Depression, where she learned to make a juicy roast from an old man"s shoe, and a Parisian-cut jacket from a second-hand pants leg. Before graduating from Ira High School in 1934, she was a favorite for comedic ingénue roles in school plays and a ferocious guard on the Ira basketball team. After graduation, she caught the eye of Hollis H. Fields, whom she married at the Snyder courthouse on the bitterly cold night of January 25, 1936. Their first home was a small wooden house that had been used for years to store grain. They swept it clean, lit a fire in the stove and began a life together that spanned 57 years. They had four children: Kent, Robert, Rodger and Betty, and before Hollis" death in 1993, they had moved 34 times and made a home in nearly every corner of this state. Older Snyderites may recall that during the 50s, she owned and operated The Fabric Mart on the east side of the square. Everyone recalls how she loved to laugh, how she walked through the house singing every day of her life, how she could make a kid feel like someone special, and how she never got too old to be a barrel of fun.
Evelyn was a member of the Colonial Hills Baptist Church in Snyder. She was preceded in death by her husband Hollis, her son Rodger, and siblings Clifton Thomas, Estelle Thomas Swan and Annie Clyde Thomas. She will be greatly missed by her three surviving children, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and innumerable nieces and nephews to the third degree.
Services will be held at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home at 10:00 AM Friday, December 30, 2011, followed by interment at Hillside Memorial Gardens directed by Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
