Ruby Inez Teaff January 14, 1915 – May 28, 2014
Ruby Inez Teaff, 99, of Snyder passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2014. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2014 at the First Baptist Church, Snyder, Texas, with her son, Grant Teaff of Waco officiating.
Visitation will be held immediately following the service at the church.
Inez Grant Teaff was born January 14, 1915, in Ira, Texas to Oscar Grant and Lola Huddleston Grant . She lived there most of her young life; however, at age 7 she and her two sisters lost their father to small pox while he was attending a mechanical trade school in Kansas City. She, her mother and her sisters became a family of only four, which was to be permanent. She graduated from high school in Ira, and married the love of her life, Bill Teaff, in 1933. As a Hermleigh High School graduate, Bill saw Inez standing under a peach tree one afternoon. He told his friends, “that's my peach and I intend to marry her." Marry her he did!
Inez and Bill lived in Snyder for 78 years, and had two loving children, a son, Grant and a daughter, Juanez. Inez was a devoted mother to her children, and their home was always open to all the high school and college friends who frequently visited. During this time, she saw her children graduate from college, marry, and have families of their own. Inez also worked as a clerk in Thompson’s Shoe Store, for some forty years. Most of the Snyder folks today can remember being fitted for a pair of shoes or boots by Mrs. Teaff. She loved people and she loved her job, which she always did with a smile and sometimes a funny joke.
Inez was active in the community, as President of the American Business Women’s Association, Martha Ann Women’s Club and many other organizations. She and her husband belonged to the Scurry County Square Dance Club. It was one of the joys of their life, and they traveled to many places in Texas to exhibit their expertise on the dance floor. They were always available to chaperone dances and activities for their children’s schools.
As their son played football in Snyder High School, Junior College, and McMurry College, their interest in weekend travel was keen. They were always in the stands for ballgames, and when Grant became a head coach at McMurry College, Angelo State University, and Baylor University, they did not miss many games, whether at home or away. They were great supporters, and Inez never attended one of her son’s games without believing that game could be won, no matter how hard the competition appeared. Of course, they were just as passionate about Juanez’s activities in Snyder High School and North Texas State University. There were always important lessons being taught in the home, that of hard work, diligence, honesty, and good values.
The Teaffs were faithful and active members of First Baptist Church, during all the years in Snyder. Inez taught six year old children in Sunday School for 60 years. She even taught her own children. Grant is certain the first time he excitedly heard the story of David and Goliath it was from his mother in Sunday School. Many of those children over the years have grown into adults, and many tell the generational story of Mrs. Teaff teaching them, their own children, and their grandchildren. Inez was expert at handiwork and spent countless hours creating priceless quilts and cup towels for her family and friends. She was an avid sports fan and beyond cheering for her Baylor Bears, rarely missed a Spurs basketball game or a Rangers baseball game on TV.
Inez was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Teaff, and her sister, Billy McCravey. She is survived by a sister, Helen Robinson of Snyder; her daughter, Juanez Carver and her husband Dr. Carroll Carver of Arlington and her son Grant Teaff and his wife, Donell, of Waco. Her surviving grandchildren are Casey Carver, Greg Carver and wife Becky of Coppell, Jeff Carver and wife Lesley of Flower Mound. Also, Tammy Bookbinder and husband Russ of San Antonio, Dr. Tracy Teaff and Cindy Curtis (granddaughter-by-choice) of Belton, and Layne Pittman and husband Drew of Salado. Her great grandchildren include Cody, Clay and Kennedy Carver & Grace and Grant Carver. Also Josh Bookbinder and his wife Ashley, Jessy Bookbinder, Jake and Eli Pittman. Inez also leaves behind her faithful and beloved dog, Sweetie Sugar. Inez enjoyed her many nieces and nephews and valued family above all. Special gratitude goes out to Inez’s loyal and loving neighbors, Mike and Helen McLeod. The family is eternally grateful for the compassionate care and love given by Vera & Brenda Ubando and Christy Lay. We would also like to extend a very warm thank you to Integra Care Hospice and Cogdell Home Healthcare.
