Ray Herring

September 8, 1930 — March 18, 2015

Ray Herring, 84, a longtime resident of Fluvanna, died at his home on Wednesday, March 18, 2015.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Snyder with Pastor Ben Reid, Pastor Tony Wofford, and Willard Moody officiating. Burial will follow at the Fluvanna Cemetery under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.

Visitation will be held from 6-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ray was born on September 8, 1930 in Dawson County, Texas to Bill and Jimmie Herring. The family resided near the Key community where he attended the Mt. Olive School until his teenage years. They moved to Fluvanna where he graduated before attending Texas Tech. He was drafted in 1951 into the Army where he served as a Corporal in the 82nd Airborne Division Paratroopers during the Korean Conflict. He married Gwendolyn Swan on June 5, 1953 at the First Baptist Church in Snyder. Upon discharge, he graduated from Texas Tech in 1955. After graduation he taught Vocational Agriculture at Fluvanna High School for 5 years and also farmed. He continued to farm and ranch for the remainder of his life. He enjoyed spending time hunting and fishing with his friends and family.

He is survived by his wife; Gwen, and one sister; Nelva Herring Jones of Fluvanna, one daughter; Debbie Herring of Snyder, three sons; Mike Herring and wife Pam of Fluvanna, Cole Herring and wife Kandi of Fluvanna, Jon Herring and wife Cami of Lubbock. He also leaves behind three grandsons; Jesse Herring of Fluvanna, Tanner Miller and wife Ashley of San Angelo, Sterling Miller and wife Heather of Ackerly, eleven granddaughters; Mandi Campbell and husband Joe of Hermleigh, Rendee Garrison and husband Sam of Corinth, Sharla Robertson and husband Justin of Grandbury, Mikanna Baker and husband Daniel of Midland, Jamie Hennigan and husband Esquire of Houston, Jodi Herring of Weatherford, Katie Calli and husband Brice of Weatherford, Hannah Herring of Snyder, Jenni Herring of Fluvanna, Molly Herring of Fluvanna, Sarli Winders of Lubbock and Natalie Herring of Fluvanna, and nine great-grandkids.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Sue Herring Stephens.
