M.P. was a Sergeant in the Ninth Army and served in World War II. His service extended from 1943 to 1945 and he was part of the Normandy invasion. During one of his reconnaissance missions, he captured 200 enemy soldiers. He was one of the first five American men to cross the Rhine River during the big Allied drive to conquer Nazi Germany. He also fought in the "Battle of the Bulge."

He married Rose Potter in 1946 in Eastland, Texas. M.P. and Rose moved from Cisco to Snyder in 1950, and M.P. has resided in Snyder for the past 66 years. He worked with Texaco for 35 years at the Snyder plant before retiring in 1987. After his retirement from Texaco, M.P. was involved in real estate and other business activities in the Snyder area. He was a member of Colonial Hill Baptist Church since 1980. M.P. was known to his family and friends as one who was always willing to help those in need.

Survivors include two brothers, Frank Herring and wife Della of Abilene, Texas and Murray J. Herring and wife Ann of Lakewood, Colorado; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. M.P. was preceded in death by both of his parents; his wife, Rose; his two children, Rose Anne Herring and Raye McAdams; two brothers; Brooks Herring and Lowell Herring; and his sister Minta Sam (Sammie) Pollard.
