Barbara Bigham McWhorter
Barbara was born in Wichita Falls, Texas on July 17, 1930. She passed from this life on Sunday, May 19, 2019. She graduated from Midland High School and North Texas University. She married Willie S. Bigham on September 9, 1952. They have one daughter, Brenda Billingsly. Barbara and Willie moved to Snyder to begin their teaching careers. Barbara taught at West Elementary while Willie taught at Hermleigh. When Stanfield Elementary opened, she and Willie both went to teach at Stanfield, where she taught first grade, then fifth grade, and Willie was the P.E. teacher. She continued each summer to work on her degree in Speech Pathology and upon completion of those courses, became the Speech Pathologist for the district and held that position until her retirement. Willie passed away January 6, 1985.
Those left to cherish her memory from her marriage to Willie are Brenda and Johnny Joe; Grandchildren Karrie and Sean; Kraig and Shelley; Kallie and Jason; T’Leah; Rad and Sheryl and 8 great grandchildren.
After Willie’s death, she was a widow for seven years. Her principal at Stanfield, Jean McMillon, thought she should meet her father, Mac McWhorter. Mac and Barbara soon married and moved to Abilene and spent many happy years together. She was welcomed into his large family and hosted many a domino tournament, fish fry, and Holiday gathering.
Those left to cherish her memory from her marriage to Mac are Jean and Donald McMillon, Jane and Don Goddard, Grandchildren: Mark, Matt and Rebecca, Marci and John, David and Amber, Dustie and Jay, 22 great grandchildren and 1 great, great granddaughter.
After Mac passed away on December 15, 2018, she returned to Snyder and greatly enjoyed visiting once again with her many friends and fellow teachers.
A Graveside service will be held Tuesday, May 21 at 10:00 AM at Hillside Memorial Gardens with Kinney Robinson presiding. The family requests contributions for Snyder Retired Teachers Scholarship program and Cogdell Hospice.
