Bobby Joe Goodwin, born to Allie Belle (Barrington) Goodwin and Henry Clay Goodwin on November 6, 1938, received his wings on December 28, 2023, at age 85. Bob grew up in Santa Anna, Texas with four brothers, Henry Clay Jr., James, Aubrey, and Barton. He learned how to work hard and enjoyed working with cattle and horses. He met his wife Sue (Lane) Goodwin in Coleman, a few miles down the road; with whom he later shared 64 years of married life.
Bob valued service, as was evident by his Navy enlistment upon graduation from high school, and his continuing service in law enforcement in Coleman, Pecos, Dumas, Sweetwater, and in Snyder for over 30 years. He had a talent for being able to fix almost anything ranging from tractors to saddles. He was instrumental in bringing the Price Daniel Unit to Snyder, was a member of the Tractor Club, and raised some cattle and grew pecan trees. He was a country music fan and was involved in the annual Western Swing Festival in different capacities over the years. Bob was one of the strongest, toughest men that we knew, thriving through three major heart surgeries in his lifetime. He was among the first to receive bypass surgery at Methodist Hospital in Lubbock, Texas led by a team of surgeons who trained under Dr. Michael DeBakey in Houston.
In his spare time, he would spend time in his shop fixing his tractors, building and repairing items around the house, and woodwork. He enjoyed going to Spanish Inn for enchiladas and would always be ready to have a cup of coffee and visit at the table in their home. Bob loved having his grandchildren and great-grandchildren at his home. He gave tractor rides, mower rides, and raked leaves into piles for the “grands” to jump in and scatter out. While not a huge fan of football, he enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys, especially when one of his grandsons was there to watch with him. He was a member of 37th Street Church of Christ for 57 years.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Henry Clay and Allie Belle Goodwin, brothers Henry Clay Jr., James, Aubrey, and Barton, and sisters-in-law Catherine Goodwin and Carolyn Goodwin. He is survived by his wife, Sue Goodwin, of the home, daughter Jennifer Douglass (Dee Jon) of Canyon, Texas, sons Jon Goodwin (Heather) of Lipan, Texas, and Jay Goodwin (Kathy) of Snyder, Texas. His 7 grandchildren, Dylan Douglass (Jordan) of Dallas, Dayne Douglass of Farmer’s Branch, Faith Douglass of Lubbock, Amber Goodwin of Austin, Claire Goodwin (Straton Gill) of Houston, Isabel Goodwin of Richardson, Lorin Brewster (Colton) of Fluvanna, Cortni Terrell (Cory) of Anson and 9 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
We would also like to thank the staff at Comfort Keepers, especially Christy Barrera for her diligent and loving care of Dad, and Cogdell Home Health and Hospice, Rachael, Stacey, and Lydia for their tireless and loving care and helping guide our family through this difficult time.
