After a long health battle and with the love of family around him, C. Richard Murphy, 78, of Snyder, Texas passed
away peacefully early Monday morning, July 11, 2022.
Richard will be lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend of 58 years, Barbara Murphy of Snyder, Texas. The
pride of his life, his four daughters, Sharla Free and Husband Brian Free of Midland, Texas; Sharee Hughes and
Husband Marty Hughes of Amarillo, Texas; Shayla Chappell and Husband Darrell Chappell of Snyder, Texas; Shelby
Venter of Snyder, Texas; his 11 Grandchildren, Bailey Davis and Husband Jake Davis of Houston, Texas; Meagan
Price of Amarillo, Texas; Hayden Free and wife Chandler Free of Midland, Texas; Zachary Price and wife Madason
Price of Dimmitt, Texas; Lacy Minchew and husband Stephen Minchew of Lubbock, Texas; Murphy Chappell of
McKinney, Texas; Harrison Chappell of Snyder, Texas; Katie Hughes of Amarillo, Texas; Carley Venter of Canyon,
Texas; Morgan Venter of Snyder, Texas; and Mallory Chappell of Snyder, Texas; and his Great Grandchildren Kensli
Price of Amarillo, Texas, Boggan Free of Midland, Texas and another on the way.
A sister, Kay Lamb of Albuquerque, New Mexico; two nieces and two nephews.
Richard was born in Clovis, New Mexico in 1943 to Charlie and Mary Lena Murphy. He graduated from Clovis High
School in 1962 He then attended and studied business and accounting at Abilene Christian University in Abilene,
Texas where he met his wife and the love of his life. They married in Sweetwater, Texas in 1964. Richard’s career
spanned 47 years in financial management focusing mainly in Hospital Administration. He was passionate about
rural access to quality medical care and worked diligently across the state with various rural hospitals in the
Methodist Healthcare System and also served as President of the Board for the Texas Organization of Rural and
Community Hospitals.
Richard was often referred to by many as an “Idea Factory” always thinking of ways to improve and invent, not just
in healthcare, but in his many hobbies. He was a master woodworker, who created everything from furniture to
charcuterie boards, with such perfection to detail and quality that each piece will seemingly last forever. He loved
to fish, golf, tinker with ham radios and was known to be able to fix or repair anything. But his true pride and joy
was his family, especially his 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren who called him Grampa.
Richard was a man of faith who loved the Lord and lived his life serving God as a husband, father, grandfather,
employer and friend. He served as a deacon for the 4
th
& Elm Church of Christ in Sweetwater, Texas and was a
member of Golf Course Road Church of Christ in Midland, Texas.
He was a current member of the 37
th
Street Church of Christ in Snyder, Texas.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Marilyn Murphy.
A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, July 15
th
2022, at 10:00 a.m. at the 4
th
and Elm Street Church of
Christ in Sweetwater, Texas under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home with a private family graveside
to follow.
Visitation with family and friends will be held on Thursday, July 14
th
2022, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in the Parlor at 4
th
and Elm Street Church of Christ in Sweetwater, Texas. Services are under the direction of Bell Cypert Seale Funeral Home.
