Bud was born in Snyder, TX on April 26th, 1947 to the late Doc Merritt and Dorothy Birks, yet spent all of his growing up years in Dartmouth Nova Scotia with his mother, and 4 other siblings. He returned to Texas at 19 to attend Texas Tech university where he planned to pursue a career in medicine. Bud ultimately pursued his passion of teaching and coaching, and went on to impact thousands of lives throughout his life. Bud coached boys basketball and tennis in Nazareth, Texas before moving to Snyder, coaching several of those teams to state . Bud started his career at Snyder High School as the tennis coach and one year later transitioned into boys basketball and football. He went on to become the boys varsity basketball coach for the next 15 years. Coach Birks finished his coaching career coaching freshman girls and cross country, and throughly enjoyed it. During his tenure at Snyder High School, Bud, taught all levels of math, but most enjoyed teaching algebra 2. He was and will remain most known by his former students as the teacher that helped them realize their potential, and that they could excel in math. He was still on staff, teaching math, at SHS at his passing. During his life, Coach Birks impacted thousands of student lives, both, inside and outside of the classroom. As valuable as his students were to him, nothing was more valuable to him than his family. Bud cherished his wife, and best friend ,Barbara, more than anything. His children and grandchildren were his greatest accomplishments, and his pride and joy. Bud’s living legacy will carried on by his wife, Barbara, his daughter and son-in-law Chelsie and Ryan Richard, daughter Lindsey Robinson, son John Birks, daughter and son-in-law Kendra and Thomas Boyd, his grandchildren Dylan and Presli Robinson, and Emma and Harris Boyd, his brothers Mike and John Birks, sisters Brenda Sanford and Barb Mueltner, and his many extended siblings, nieces, and nephews.
