A family rejoices because he is in the loving arms of the Master Crafter and his treasured bride.
Just as he lived, Howard Joe Harrington, 92, passed with dignity and grace in his Lubbock
home on Friday, Jan. 4, 2019.
First and foremost, Howard was a man of faith and a devoted family man. He put his wife of 71
years, Carolyn, before all else but his Lord. It is no secret that since her passing in August 2018,
he wanted nothing more than to see her again. Their unwavering romance is one for the books
and leaves a legacy of love for a large, humbled family.
Howard will also be remembered as a loyal friend, talented craftsman, gun enthusiast, ace
marksman, conservationist and outdoorsman, community servant and leader, and horseman.
He loved the beauty in the world that man did not create - the warmth of the sun on his face on
a cold West Texas day, the sound of a quail calling for its mate, and the vivid colors of the sky at
the beginning and end of each day.
Howard was born in Snyder on May 26, 1926, to Joseph MacDonald and Florence Iris Crowder
Harrington. He grew up in Lamesa, TX where his father was the local optometrist.
Joining the war efforts in 1944, Howard served in the Pacific in the Army Air Corps as a B-29
“waist-gunner.” Returning stateside a decorated sharpshooter, Howard married his sweetheart,
Carolyn Cheatham of Ballinger, on April 5, 1947 and moved to Lamesa.
They moved their growing family back to Snyder in 1954 where he owned the Medical Arts
Laboratory and X-Ray. Howard and Carolyn were lifetime members of Trinity Methodist
Church. Howard is a recognized 50+ year member of Lion’s Club. He proudly served the
organization in many capacities, including as District Governor for District 2T2 for 1978-1979.
The couple moved to Lubbock in 2014. They made their home at Heartland House, an assisted
living facility. The family is forever grateful to the Heartland House staff members and medical
professionals who have been so gracious and loving to all of us these last years.
