Born in Roscoe on April 19, 1944 to Geral and Gaye Nell McMillan Greene, John attended schools in Hermleigh and later in Snyder, where he graduated in 1962. Previous to high school graduation, he met the love of his life, Carolyn Sue Hollis during a snowball fight outside East Elementary School. Previous to any official engagement, John was happily employed by Sam Head Tractor Company. Hearing the news of an impending engagement between Carolyn and John, his father strongly suggested the teenager seek more secure employment, urging him to apply for a job at West Texas State Bank. Certain he would never be hired, nor ever be happy working at a bank, Greene grudgingly applied, deliberately leaving tractor grease under his fingernails. Somehow, bank president Hubert Cargile saw some promise in the young man and immediately hired him for a post in the bookkeeping department. Finding himself now wearing a suit & tie everyday with clean fingernails, John and Carolyn married on June 14, 1963.
Together they shared mutual dreams of the simple pleasures of life in Snyder, Texas. On April 27, 1965, daughter Vicki Ninette Greene was born. As the years passed, his love for banking and his admiration for co-workers at West Texas State Bank grew hand-in-hand. Greene embraced the profession. Eventually reaching the position of bank president, he guided the bank through drought, recession, political upheaval and economic uncertainty. Following instincts and gut feelings, Greene joined hands with strong-willed, determined, hard working people, helping them establish businesses, build homes, raise families and follow dreams. Those close to him easily recall gestures of kindness Greene personally made on sidewalks, street corners, driveways and kitchen tables: gestures of trust that never saw any paperwork and no intended repayment. He had an uncanny insight of balancing the value of a dollar with the value of a handshake. The lives he touched are too numerous to list here.
For decades, John would leave the office at closing time and head for his beloved family property east of Snyder, working cattle and raising dry land cotton with his brothers Mackie and Pete.
Retiring in 2008, Greene served as Chairman of the Board of Directors at West Texas State Bank.
John Andrew Greene is survived by his wife Carolyn (of Snyder, Texas), Daughter Ninette Greene Hawkins (husband Brian Scott Hawkins): granddaughter Melissa Blake Eagle (husband Robert Lincoln Eagle) and grandson Alec Andrew Arena: great-grand children Harley Baron Eagle & Oliver Penn Eagle. Surviving siblings include Geral Mac Greene, Judy Moss and Lealand Wallace “Pete” Greene (wife Donna Greene), mother-in-law Mildred Hollis, in-laws Tommy & Bonnie Hollis, Bennie & Nicole Hollis, Alice & Andy Townes, plus numerous nieces & nephews.
