Johney "Sonny" Noel Greenfield

Johney Noel (Sonny) Greenfield, 91, of Snyder died on Friday, March 12, 2021 in Snyder.

A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 16, at Colonial Hill Baptist Church under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home with burial following at Hillside Memorial Gardens.  Visitation will be held Monday, March 15 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home, 3101 College Ave, Snyder, TX.

Sonny Greenfield was born in Dermott, Texas to Harvey and Mary Greenfield on July 28, 1929.  He married Doris Lee Poteet on January 9, 1954 in Lakeside, California and moved to Snyder where they shared 66 years together.

Sonny graduated salutatorian from Fluvanna High School and then in 1951 he joined the army and headed to basic training at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas and spent approximately 10 months in Korea, mainly serving above the 38 ^th Parallel.  He served as a fire directional chief in the 2 ^nd Chemical Mortar Battalion Company B during the Korean War, followed by 11 years first in the National Guard and then the Army Reserves where he finished his service with the rank of Captain.

After high school, he started his own business, Sonny’s Shirt Shop, where he made custom-made western shirts and women’s blanket coats, even fitting shirts for the Riders of the Six White Horses at Hardin-Simmons University. After returning from Korea, he worked at the “Chevy House” and Fenton’s before being employed by Thompson’s Shoe Store where he worked for almost 40 years and fit shoes on the feet of at least half of Scurry County.  He was active in Colonial Hill Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, on numerous church committees, taught 3rd Grade Sunday school for many years, participated with the Church Builders on many projects, was instrumental in beginning the Television Ministry and served in that ministry until just the past couple of years.  He was active and served in leadership roles in the Jaycees, Lions Club, Gold Coaters and following retirement became involved in the Food Cupboard where he served as director for many years.  Sonny was a Mason and active in the Scurry Lodge #706 and also served at the state level. He and Doris loved to travel both by motorcycle and travel trailer with Don and Gayle and worked to check off all of the different states they visited.

Sonny was preceded in death by wife, Doris: his parents, Harvey and Mary Greenfield; his brother, Barney Greenfield; and his sister, Verna Love.  He is survived by his son Charlie Greenfield and wife, Vicki of Monahans; daughter Vickie Greenfield of Snyder; and son Mike Greenfield and wife, Patti of Abilene.  Grandchildren Chad Greenfield and wife Lauren of Houston; Kayli Tschauner of Midland; Sarah Andrews and husband, Carson of Midland; Heather Juarez and husband, Jordon of Abilene; Katie Palmer and husband, Luke of Abilene; Blake Greenfield and wife, Sarah of Kailua, Hawaii; Brett Greenfield of Brooklyn, New York; and 11 great-grandchildren: Graham, Grace, Meredith, Carissa, Barker, Briggs, Bennett, Liam, Kohen, Jude, and Jones.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Scurry County Ministerial Alliance Food Cupboard or Colonial Hill Baptist Church Television Ministry.
