Patsy Marleen Mayes
June 16, 1937 – March 26, 2021
One of the kindest women ever, Patsy Marleen Mayes of Snyder, Texas, was delivered from pain into the arms of Jesus on March 26, 2021. As she was given the keys to her mansion, we envision that her heavenly home included an array of colorful flowerbeds waiting for her personal touch. The rolling, green lawns were stretched as far as the eye could see just waiting on her to “crank up” her lawnmower. The final touch was the large lake, fishing poles, and an unending supply of minnows for all of the Crappie awaiting.
Graveside services will be Monday, March 29 at 2:00 p.m. at Hillside Memorial Gardens in Snyder, Texas with her nephew, Mike Dean, and close family friend Keith Hackfeld sharing memories with the family.
Patsy was one of seven children, born in Gainesville, Texas, to G.A. (Billy) and Zora Dean. She is preceded in death by three brothers: Billy Jack Dean, Don Dean, Robert (Bobby) Dean and one sister, Peggy Patrick.
Patsy had one brother, Charles Dean, living in Wichita Falls, Texas, and one sister, Paula Culpepper of Snyder, Texas.
Patsy met Norman when she was 14. They were married 66 years until his death on March 4, 2021. All of her life, she was deeply devoted to Norman and supported him in all he did. She loved stepping back in time to tell stories of their dating before they married. They lived in Wichita Falls and Iowa Park before moving to Snyder in 1970 when Norman took the job as manager of Lone Star Gas.
Patsy worked many years for Sullivan-Stanfield-Fowler Insurance Agency and then for B & F Well Service. After retirement from B & F Well Service, Patsy continued sharing kindness to people while working part time at Hackfeld’s for Keith and Jackie Hackfeld. She loved people and shared her beautiful smile and kindness with many in the community. Anyone with whom she came in contact received Patsy’s undivided attention through her gentle and gracious spirit.
Coming from a large family, Patsy knew how to lovingly manage the home front while also working outside the home. Eating out was not the norm in the Mayes household because Patsy prepared the best homecooked meals for her four children and husband. Working outdoors in her yard and fishing in Graham or Stamford provided her the time to enjoy herself. When grandchildren came along starting in 1980, being “MawMaw” gave Patsy the chance to share her laughter and love with a new generation. Special shopping trips to pick out what her grandkids wanted gave her great joy. In later years, phone calls and visits from her grown grandchildren were a source of much comfort and pride.
Patsy is survived by her four children and spouses; Norman Joe Mayes, Jr. (Buddy) and Cynthia of Midland, Texas; David Mayes and his wife, Liz, of Abilene, Texas; Susie Teeters and her husband, Dennis, of Eunice, New Mexico, and Sherry Bilderback and her husband, Dave, of Snyder, Texas.
Patsy “MawMaw” was cherished and treasured deeply by 8 grandchildren – Caleb Teeters, Julie Allison, Summer Matlock, Marshall Mayes, Nathan Teeters, Emily Rollins, Morgan Ford, and Jessica Shubert. In addition, she was blessed with 14 great grandchildren.
The absence that she leaves in the hearts of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren is keenly felt. However, the assurance that she is in the arms of Jesus gives an abundance of peace. The love legacy that she invested in each and every life will be carried for generations to come as “MawMaw stories” will be shared and “slightly embellished” and withstand the test of time. No doubt she is now with Papa Goat, sitting on a boat dock with the Fisher of Men, and singing “It is Well with My Soul” (mainly because she is catching more fish than either of them).
The family expresses their deepest gratitude to Cogdell Home Health and Hospice and our cherished Amy for the incredible comfort, care and strength given. They are especially thankful for God’s angels, Rosa, Teresa, Mariah, Vickie and Roberta for their unselfish giving of themselves to the care of Patsy and Norman the last several months. Words cannot convey our love and thankfulness for God sending each of them to be part of our family during this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that you consider a memorial donation to what is fittingly an organization that represents the best of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt.
