Peggy was born on October 13, 1936, to Vernon and Irene Creighton in the Treadway Community of Borden County, Texas, in her parents’ home. She attended school at Mesquite in Borden County and in Lamesa. She graduated from Lamesa High School in 1954 and married Ross Wells Westbrook on August 9, 1954. During their 65-year marriage, they raised cattle and horses in Howard and Borden Counties. Peggy graduated from Howard College in 1969 with an associate degree and from Abilene Christian University in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in education. She taught junior high English and reading at Borden County for 22 years and was a librarian for Colorado ISD in Colorado City.
Her students remember her emphasis on legible handwriting, and many still owe their perfect penmanship to her instruction. Peggy was a master homemade ice cream maker, specializing in vanilla and “pink stuff.” Her arrowhead-hunting skills were second to none, and she made the best hamburgers and tacos in the county. With her penchant for reading the dictionary, she could master a crossword puzzle in an hour – using a pen. She was a member of the church of Christ, and her life of service to her students and her family is a jewel in her heavenly crown.
Mrs. Westbrook is survived by her son, Sid Wells Westbrook, and her daughter, Dana Westbrook Cooley, and son-in law Ted Cooley. Also surviving are her brother, J.O. (Bo) Creighton and his wife, Whiz, of Paris, Texas; her two granddaughters, Erin Lowery and husband, Caleb, and Meghan Hicks and husband, Shane; and several nieces and nephews. Her great-grandchildren are Walker Michael Lowery, Stella Fae Lowery, Jonah Jay Hicks and Logan Ross Hicks. She is predeceased by her husband; her parents; her sisters, Verna Fay Ogden, Jean Taylor and June Durham.
