Steven was born on April 1, 1975, to David and Delia (Gonzalez) Peña. He married Mandy Matheny in September of 2004 and together they have six children. Steven was a graduate of Snyder High School and was set to complete his Bachelor’s Degree in Counseling from Texas Tech University. Steven was a faithful and diligent servant of the Lord and an Ordained Minister with the Assemblies of God. For 18 and a half years, Steven has served as Lead Pastor of Snyder First Assembly of God alongside his wife, Mandy. In 2014, Steven founded Snyder Community Resource Center, a community based nonprofit. He compounded these efforts to make an astounding impact on the community he loved. His influence effected thousands.
Steven was so much more than a pastor. Anyone who ever met Steven will not forget his infectious laugh, drive to help people, and his deep love and admiration for his family. Even though the majority of the time, his infectious laugh came from jokes that he made himself! People were his passion. No matter what doors opened for him throughout his life, his humility and perspective remained the same. Steven had the innate ability to center in on the people that needed him the most and know what they needed, most of the time before they did. If there was an opportunity to share the Word of God and introduce someone to Jesus, Steven took it. Have you prayed about it? Have you taken it to the Word? Read your Bible! These were phrases most of us have heard him say to us. Steven taught us all to put others before ourselves. He led by example in everything he did.
Steven loved his community and he worked tirelessly to help improve the quality of life in Snyder. He wanted what was best for every person he encountered and made sure there was a place for everyone to go to get help tailored to their need. Steven spent his life teaching others about how to be the hands and feet of Jesus. His legacy of serving will live on forever. The impact he made in our community will be remembered for generations to come and his love of people will be paid forward by those that were lucky enough to have been loved by him. If he was here today he would have three words for us all: “READ YOUR BIBLE!”
We would like to say a special thank you to Dr. David Kerr, Cogdell Memorial Hospital, and the nurses who tirelessly cared for Steven.
