Billy Bob
As he has been called home to be with the Father, In reflection, Billy Bob McMullan has put his boot prints all over Scurry County for the past 91 years.
Except for two years in the military and four years at Texas Tech, McMullan has called Scurry County home - and he's made the most of it.
On December 16, 1926 William Robert McMullan was born to Vern and Helen Trix (Sims) McMullan in Austin, TX. He married Jo Alyce Goss on August 25, 1950 in Snyder, Texas.
Billy Bob grew up 12 miles northeast of Snyder on Ennis Creek where he attended school through the sixth grade. He and other students in those days rode their horses to the two-room school which was heated by a potbellied stove and air conditioned with open windows. When Billy Bob finished the sixth grade, the school was closed and Snyder sent buses into the community to transport students to Snyder. While attending Snyder High School he played football for the Snyder Tigers, and has always talked about how much he enjoyed this.
Billy Bob graduated from Snyder High in 1943 just in time to be inducted into the U.S. Army. He took his basic training in Boloxi Miss. He served in the South Pacific at Pearl Harbor, and was discharged in 1945. Upon his return to Texas he enrolled at Texas Tech University in Lubbock as an Ag major, majoring in animal husbandry.
Billy Bob had never considered a career in education. However, agriculture was already in his blood growing up on his parent's section and a half cotton-farm. Here they had cotton, cattle, hogs and chickens. He visited the family place weekly until he was no longer able to.
After graduating from Texas Tech University, Billy Bob was offered a job as a county agent in Fort Stockton in 1949, but it didn't take long to come back to Scurry County. Broadway Browning advised Billy Bob of an open position in Hermleigh for $200 more a year, where he first taught with his wife, Jo Alyce. After a year, Mr. Browning advised he will be retiring as the Ag teacher at Snyder High School and encouraged him to apply for the position for yet and additional $200 a year. In all, he taught Vocational Agriculture for 35 years making a positive impact on young people. In his years in education it is estimated that he had more than 2500 students. He was a two-time recipient of the Harry Winston award. During his tenure, he had many wins at State competitions with his grass judging team. The dairy cattle team also won state.
Billy Bob retired after the school year in 1986, but did not completely cut himself off from young people. He served two terms on the Snyder School Board. He also maintained ties with young people as an active member of the Scurry County Junior Livestock Association for many years after retirement, as a judge, with individual projects, and in any way he could be involved.
Because of his long tenure in Scurry County, Billy Bob understandably remains interested in the county lore, recalling his days of growing up on Ennis Creek, where he enjoyed fishing until he was unable to get to the creeks edge.
Billy Bob has been a longtime member of the Scurry County Historical Society and was active when the group moved the Dermott School and Dodson House to the coliseum ground. He is a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, and a lifetime member of the Texas State Teachers Association and Vocational Ag Teachers Association. He is also a member of the Scurry County Farm Bureau and the Veterans of Foreign Wars,
Billy Bob was a lover of all animals, and leaves behind his ever-faithful companion Trixie Dell.
